God is a God
of covenant. That word covenant is a basic term that describes God’s
relationship with his people. God takes the initiate of entering into
relationship with his people, but God expects human beings to respond to that initiative.
Every generation of God’s people had to respond to it. The covenant had its
obligations and blessings, at a tie, the people of Israel began to ignore the
obligation of the covenant. God was always faithful, but they weren’t. It was
then that God made another provision of a better covenant. It would not be like
the old one. It was going to be a new covenant. it would be fulfilled in the
passion, death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ. Jesus says lifting up
the cup of wine “This is the blood of the new and eternal covenant.” St Paul
acknowledges, “God has made up competent to be ministers of the new covenant,
not of letter but of spirit”(2 cor 3:6). And Hebrews 9:15 says,” for this
reason he (Jesus) is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are
called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, because a death has occurred
that redeemed them from the transgression under the first covenant. “The center
of this new covenant is Jesus Christ.
Jesus had
freed us from sin through his passion, death and resurrection. He is the
perfect image of the father. He has shown us the way to the father. He has
opened the gate of heaven for us. Possession of heaven is the target of this
new covenant. The new covenant brings us in contact with the Holy Spirit. Everyone
who is baptized has already entered into the covenant. The obligation of this
covenant is to trust in God. He gives us the grace to fulfill the covenant.
