Envy is an
evil seed that can grow within a person, unplanned. Envy is a defined as a
resentful emotion that occurs when a person lacks another’s superior quality, achievement
or possession and wishes that the other lacked it.
Envy is that
feeling of resentment within you each time you see people do some good things
that you cannot do. Envy can also grow in people. In the book of (numbers 11:
25-29) God released his spirit upon Eldad and medad and they started
prophesying. A man saw them and ran to Moses to inform him about this. Joshua heard
and became envious. He begged Moses to stop them. A similar story occurs in
(Mark 9:38-49) with john and other disciples, how they tried to stop people
from casting out demons in Jesus’ name.
How do you
feel when people who are not in your camp of belief are performing some good
works? Do you condemn them and wish they would fail? When other people preach
better than you do; when they pray more than you do; when they manifest a gift
or talent which you do not have: don’t grow envious. Don’t hate them because of
these. Rather, pray for them and thank God for your own. It is unfortunate to
see how some pious societies turn against one another just because they don’t pray
the same way. They condemn one another and refuse to support one another. God
cannot be part of this division. Anyone who is in this category of persons is
fighting against God. When you see people doing what you cannot do, thank God
for it, then, someone will also thank God for your own gifts and talents.
